2025: How transforming transport will drive growth and better UK mobility

Driving growth dominates nearly every industry conversation. It’s bolstered by an aspirational policy programme and a top-down push to boost British productivity. Those involved in housing and infrastructure know the score: “If you want growth, you need better transport.” Stantec’s Leigh Stolworthy led a dynamic roundtable discussion with developers and transport-delivery authorities to explore the challenges and questions surrounding how we can make this leap. Author: Leigh Stolworthy, Director Transport Planning, Stantec

How can we deliver more sustainable transport initiatives that better support a new settlement or urban-regeneration scheme? And what do we need to do differently to reduce car dependency and drive development with a more balanced modal share? These were just a couple of the questions posed to our participants sparking interesting conversation.

The group shared real-world examples of successful mobility solutions from the UK and around the world, highlighting that reducing car use requires credible, convenient, and equitable alternatives.

There was a unanimous agreement that connected places are thriving places. Yet, the conversation delved deeper into what constitutes effective case-making. Are we truly designing for future generations, and how can we address our unconscious bias towards driving by offering better choices that meet evolving needs?

In short, the consensus was clear. Creating connectivity that works for people is hardly reinventing the wheel, yet within a complex system of competing interests and priorities, achieving better UK mobility is an ever-evolving challenge.
